Let’s Kick It!

Holy cow.  This kickboxing class yesterday was the most fun I’ve had working out since… well, since EVER!  The instructors were loud, in your face and utterly hilarious.  I swear I was laughing the whole time.

When we rolled in, we met Anne who is the sweetest person ever.   She’s been working with  LA Kickboxing  for the past few months with some personal training sessions and documenting her experiences on her blog.  If you’re even remotely interested in kickboxing you should check out her series – she’s got all sorts of pictures and funny stories.  Clearly it was enough to sucker me in!

The first thing we did was have our hands wrapped to protect our knuckles and wrists.  The wraps felt pretty strange, but then we were set up with a pair of atrociously stinky  real deal, Rocky-esque boxing gloves.  The second you put these things on you’ll feel invincible – I swear!

We started out learning a few basic combinations of punches, jabs and hooks.

Then we added in some round-house kicks!  These were fun, though I wish they would have reminded us to double knot our shoes – mine came untied at a rather inopportune time!

At least I only missed out on some very public lunges… yes, in the middle of the sidewalk.   These guys were crazy I tell you!

In between boxing combinations we did push-ups, squats, mountain climbers, ran to the corner of the block and back… what really did me in though was the ab work.  These moves were killer!

By the end of the hour we were drenched, but feeling pretty good about ourselves.  We survived!

And our appetites were demanding fro-yo!  Red Mango might be worth a second trip back to Clarendon…

As for today I’m feeling pretty good.  My right shoulder is a bit sore, but I’m not nearly as uncomfortable as I anticipated being.  Watch, now that I said that I’m  going to wake up tomorrow unable to move!

    Sounds like a lot of fun and kickass workout! Fro-yo after that workout is a must!

  3. That looks really fun!! The closest I’ve ever done to kickboxing is Tae Bo – and I haven’t done that workout video in a LONG time but I remember it being insanely hard! Haha

    This looks like a fantastic work out and a TON of fun!! I took kick boxing in gym class in high school, it was fun, but I never was able to really have fun with it and go all out because I didn’t want to go back to class dripping in sweat (yuck!).
